Serie A wrap: Inter rise | Roma, Milan fumble | Juve top

Serie A By: Linus Onyeze | 30/01/2017

Inter Milan wre 3-0 winners over Pescara in Serie A over the weekend to continue their rise up the table.

AS Roma lost grounds in the chase for the Serie A title, following their 3-2 defeat at Sampdoria and with Juventus winning against Sassuolo, the gap has now been increased to four points, with the Old Lady having a game advantage.

At the base of the table, Crotone did their survival chances a world of good with a 4-1 win over Empoli, while Pescara and Palermo didn’t do much to aid their chances of retaining their top-flight status after they both failed to win.

After 22 rounds of matches, we review how the table is shaping up as the 2016/17 season progresses.

Napoli 1-1 Palermo

The Naples-based club failed in their quest to keep up the chase with Roma and Juventus for the title, after they were held to a draw by relegation-threatened Palermo at home. The draw means they failed to gain sufficient grounds on Roma, who were beaten Sampdoria. But it wasn’t the worst result for Palermo, who would be delighted they didn’t lose all the points.

Sassuolo 0-2 Juventus

The Old Lady continued to show their superiority in Serie A with another win, as they inch closer to a fifth-straight Scudetto. Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain’s first half goals were enough, but it also presented a sorry situation for Sassuolo, who are struggling to live up to the heights of last season. The loss now sees them 16th on the table.

Sampdoria 3-2 Roma

Last week, Roma were just a point adrift of Juventus but following this loss, it is now four and they must be worried seeing as Juve still has a game advantage. Napoli’s failure to beat Palermo means they maintain their second position, while this result keeps Sampdoria firmly on 13th.

Inter 3-0 Pescara

The Nerazzurri’s renaissance continued apace as they dispatched relegation battlers Pescara at the San Siro. The win lifts them to fourth after Lazio’s loss, and it represents a significant improvement for a side that showed too much inconsistency at the start of the season. For Pescara, they remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just nine points, safe to say they are headed back to Serie B.

Udinese 2-1 AC Milan

Milan once again caught napping, and have now dropped to seventh on the log following this result, with a place in Europe next season now in real jeopardy. Udinese on the other hand, are 10th with this result.
