AS Roma lost the chance to remain on course for Champions League football next season as they suffered a surprise home defeat to Sampdoria. But it wasn’t the same story for Juventus and Napoli, who both won to continue the race for the Serie A title.

We take a look at how it all went down in Italy’s top flight league at the weekend and what teams are making progress or not.

Roma 0-1 Sampdoria

The capital club suffered a surprise home loss to Sampdoria, meaning they are only now four points better than their conquerors. It also spelt a huge blow to Roma’s Champions League hopes for next season as the defeat means they are fifth on the table.

Napoli 3-1 Bologna

Table-toppers Napoli continued their impressive run with a convincing win over Bologna. Coming from behind, and Mbaye own goal and a brace from Dries Mertens made sure Maurizio Sarri’s side stayed top again.

Milan 2-1 Lazio

Genarro Gatusso’s side recorded an important win to stay within European places and even though the target would be to return to the Champions League, this was a step in the right direction, only if they can keep it up.

Spal 1-1 Inter

Luciano Spalletti’s Inter failed to take advantage of Lazio’s loss, as they were held at relegation-threatened Spal. They remain within Champions League places, but could easily have climbed to third with a win.

Chievo 0-2 Juventus

The Old Lady kept pace with Napoli at the top of the table with this important win. They keep sending messages that they would not relinquish their title so easily, but they remain a point behind the Naples club.
