Mourinho steals the march on Chelsea for Spurs ace

Toby Alderweireld appears to have poured cold water on reported interest from Manchester United by suggesting he could remain at Tottenham.

The Belgian endured a tough season under Mauricio Pochettino last term, and there have been reports he could join United with the Red Devils said to be interested.

A clause in Alderweireld's £50,000-a-week contract will make him available for £22million next year should Spurs trigger a one-year extension to 2020 and he has suggested he could stay on with Spurs.

“Yeah, why not?” the 29-year-old said when asked if he could remain at Tottenham. “I have two years left on my contract. I don't know what's going to happen. The national team is the most important thing now.

“It's going to be a different situation (next season). The only positive thing for me is the World Cup. It's the biggest thing in the world for me now. I need to focus. I'm not reading anything.

“I've done well for a couple of years in the Premier League. I was injured and now I want to show myself for Belgium. I'm feeling fit and that's the most important thing.”
