Spurs vs Dortmund: Teams news, predictions & likely lineups

The Champions League returns to Wembley on Wednesday evening as increasingly familiar foes Tottenham Hotspurs and Borussia Dortmund go head-to-head for the fifth time in three years.

The Premier League and the Bundesliga sides are sweating on the fitness of several of their key players and the hosts, Harry Kane is inching ever closer to a return from an ankle injury, whilst Dortmund icon Marco Reus faces a late fitness test after suffering from a thigh injury in recent weeks.

Team News

Lucas Moura was only named as a substitute at the weekend, but the Brazilian could be preferred to Fernando Llorente on Wednesday night but Eric Dier has been absent through illness, but the Englishman may return to the middle of the park with Moussa Sissoko potentially missing out.

Mauricio Pochettino could revert to a back three, which would lead to Toby Alderweireld returning to the right-side of the backline.

Lucien Favre could potentially opt to stick with the same starting lineup which he selected for the game against Hoffenheim.

Dortmund had been superb for three-quarters of that match, with their demise only coming after a change to the system with Paco Alcacer being brought on to lead the line and Thomas Delaney could potentially return to the team in order to add an extra player to the midfield.

Head to Head

Wednesday's showdown will represent just the fifth competitive contest between the sides, but each of those meetings have come since March 2016.

Dortmund recorded wins both home and away to prevail 5-1 on aggregate when the teams squared off in the last 16 of the Europa League almost three years ago.

However, Spurs emerged victorious in the doubleheader during last season's Champions League group stages.

Recent Form

After being eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, Spurs bounced back with consecutive victories against Watford, Newcastle United and Leicester City, who pushed them to their limit on Sunday.

Similar to the hosts, Dortmund also suffered elimination from competition in recent weeks, falling on penalties to Weder Bremen in the DFB Pokal and the result comes in the middle of a miserable run of form as Dortmund are without a win in their last three games.

They looked to have recovered as they raced to a 3-0 lead against Hoffenheim, only two concede three goals in the last 15 minutes to gift their opponents an unlikely point.

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup: Lloris; Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen; Trippier, Dier, Winks, Rose; Eriksen, Moura, Son

Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup: Burki; Piszczek, Weigl, Diallo, Hakimi; Dahoud, Witsel; Sancho, Phillip, Guerreiro; Gotze

Score prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Dortmund
