Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose (standing second right) has been blocked from facing Manchester United in the FA Cup after his work permit application was denied.

Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose will not debut for Blackburn Rovers when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend after his work permit application was rejected.

The 28-year old agreed a loan move from Celtic to the Championship side, but he has been denied a work permit by the UK home office, reports The Sun.

The England FA have more strict rules than in Scotland and Ambrose has not played enough internationals in the last two seasons to meet their tougher criteria. According to the report, Blackburn will have an appeal heard next week but it will be too late for him to face United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Nigeria international was expected to debut for Blackburn when they face the Red Devils, as they have been hit by injuries and bans following their defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, but that will not happen now following his failure to get his work permit.
