Super Eagles captain Mikel launches football foundation

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has launched a football foundation to discover talent across Nigeria as he plans to give back to the society.

The 31-year-old Tianjin TEDA midfielder has announced a reality series titled "Nigeria’s Next Football Superstar" where he will pick nine talented footballers from auditions across the country to be signed on to academies in England and a shot at professionalism.

Mikel speaking to the media about his foundation in partnership with Kwese TV which had in attendance kids from across the city of Lagos was held at the CIS pitch, Lekki he said: "Home is where it all started for me, Nigeria is where it all started. I will always want to give back to Nigeria, my community.

"As some of you know I was born in the northern part in Jos, my family still stay in Jos, so for me, it’s all about giving back to the kids. We are here to make sure we impact kids with sports, football. But it is important to know that you need to go to school, you need to get an education and play football.

"And hopefully you guys one day will be representing Nigeria, be representing the national team, some of you will be playing for Chelsea or Manchester United, winning the Premier League, winning the Champions League.

"I hope one day one of you guys will lift the Premier League title and we will be celebrating one of you. I hope that the Mikel Obi Foundation can help you guys achieve this goal you guys have in mind. I will be here to support you in any way I can.”

The show will begin with trials in Abuja in March 2019, Port Harcourt March 2019 and Lagos May 2019 before going across other African countries.

Mikel feature for Chelsea over a decade making 347 appearances scoring six goals and he won Champions League, Europa League, two Premier League, four FA Cup, two Caraboa Cup, Africa Cup of Nations title as well as an Olympic Bronze medal with Nigeria.
