Eteng Okri, a Nigerian engineer, has been living in Krasnodar for more than six years. Having completed his first degree in Oil and Gas Engineering two years ago, the young man is now working as well as studying for his Master’s degree. He watched the Super Eagles defeat Argentina in Krasnodar in an international friendly match last November. In this interview with, Okri speaks to Lolade Adewuyi about the expectations of the Nigerian community in Russia ahead of the World Cup.

How are you preparing for the World Cup?

We know that one of the biggest events in all of sport is approaching quickly and it is joyful when your country is participating and you are there physically to support them. For me, I will say I am very opportune to be in Russia during this period and this will be the first World Cup I will be experiencing. To be sincere, I am 100 percent ready to go out there and support the Super Eagles.

What is the feeling around the Nigerian community in Russia about Nigeria’s participation?

The Nigerian community in Russia was excited when we qualified for the World Cup and when they knew the Super Eagles will be coming again to Russia. As I am talking right now all the Nigerians and even our African brothers and sisters are eager to go out and support the Super Eagles.

Which Nigerian players are you looking forward to seeing at the World Cup and why?

Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel - they are my favourite, talented players in the squad with great skills on the pitch.

You watched Nigeria defeat Argentina in Krasnodar, how was the experience and what are you expecting during the World Cup?

The experience was great, after the game I was fully convinced that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will go far in the tournament. There was great understanding in the team, they showed great skills and they entertained both the fans and Russians. I give them kudos for that.

How far do you think the Super Eagles will go at the World Cup?

I think they will reach the knockout stage and hopefully qualify for the semifinals.

What are Russians saying about the Super Eagles?

After the game against Argentina, Russians were terrified because, before the match day, everyone was saying that Argentina was going to win and the majority was in support of that. But it turned out the opposite. They were later entertained and came to us (supporters) congratulating us and saying we have a good team. I recall a man walked towards me saying, the best team Nigeria ever had was during the time of Okocha and Kanu but he was shocked by the game and that the team was good and the coach is trying.

What should travelling Nigerians expect when they visit Russia?

My advice to Nigerians coming to Russia is that they shouldn’t worry Russia is a nice, calm and peaceful country to visit. Russians are friendly and lucky enough the tournament is during summer when the weather will be favourable. Again when coming be ready to taste Russian vodka so that you will have a Russian accent before going back.
