With Blackburn 2-1 down towards the end of the game, Akpan put the ball into the back of the net, as he thought he had earned a point for his side. He was however disappointed when referee Duncan ruled out the goal for handball, and he proceeded to shove the referee, who promptly showed him a red card.

Wednesday defender scored a first-half hat-trick, even though a Sam Hutchinson own goal in between offered some hope to Blackburn.

And Akpan thought he had brought his side level late on when he managed to find the back o the net with his effort, only for it to be ruled out for handball. With the defeat, Blackburn are now second from bottom and facing the real possibility of being relegated to League One.
