The 25-year old thought he had earned a point for his side when his effort found the back of the net late on but was disappointed when it was ruled out for handball, with the midfielder exerting his frustration by appearing to push referee Scott Duncan.
Defender Vincent Sasso netted a first-half brace to set Wednesday on the way to victory, even though Sam Hutchinsn
scored an own goal in between to give Blackburn some hope.
But with the defeat to Wednesday, Blackburn remain second from bottom on the table and face a real possibility of being relegated to League One.
Akpan has four international caps for Nigeria, having made his debut in October 2014, in the 3-2 win over Sudan in Abuja in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
