Longtime Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton has been promoted to player-assistant coach by the Swans head coach Paul Clement following the exit of Chelsea legend and new Eupen manager Claude Makelele.

Britton, who is close to acquiring his UEFA A license, has been with the Welsh outfit since 2003. He’s made 436 appearances as the club moved from League Two all the way up to the Premier League, with just a 26-match move to Sheffield United in the middle.

Swansea in an official statement said: "SWANSEA CITY ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE LEON BRITTON HAS ACCEPTED A PLAYER-ASSISTANT COACH ROLE AT THE CLUB.

"Britton, who has played more than 500 games during two spells for the club, fills the vacancy left by Claude Makelele after the Frenchman was named manager of Belgian top-flight club K.A.S Eupen. With Britton now serving a dual role as both player and assistant coach, a new club captain will be named.

"While the 35-year-old remains an important part of the playing squad, he will also work under manager Paul Clement and alongside Nigel Gibbs, Karl Halabi and Tony Roberts.

"Britton will train and be available for selection as normal, however, he will be part of the coaching staff when he is unavailable to train or play."

Britton in his acceptance speech said: "I am delighted. To have this opportunity is a massive moment for me and my family. I spoke to the manager, the chairman and to my family and decided it was an opportunity I should definitely take.

“I am grateful to the manager and to the chairman for having the belief in my ability to put me in this role. The manager has worked at some of the biggest clubs in world football – he has a vast knowledge of coaching.

"It’s great for me to have the chance to lean on him and to look at what he does every day behind the scenes and how he goes about his business." Britton told Swansea's website

Swans have a history bringing players into the management fold in an even more dramatic fashion, hiring actual player Garry Monk to replace Michael Laudrup. Monk did not appear for Swans after the appointment.
