TBT: The defeat that turned Man Utd season around in 1998/99 - FCNaija

The most memorable season on Manchester United football club is no doubt the 1998/99 season when the Sir Alex Ferguson led team won the historic treble.

Manchester United did not have a good start to the campaign and it was not an easy sail to the end of the season, five months before achieving the historic treble success their domestic form was poor and the defeat to Middlesbrough on 22nd of December 1998 at the Old Trafford ensured Manchester United have not recorded a win in their last four games.

Fergusson and his men were under intense pressure and to make matter worse they drew against Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea and their arch-rivals Arsenal was comfortably at the top of the Premier League.

The turning point came and the defeat against Middlesbrough at the Old Trafford was the eye opener for Manchester United as Fergusson drove his men to 20 games unbeaten run and knocked Arsenal off the Premier League table and won the point to win the Premier League.

Manchester United won the FA Cup comfortably with a 2-0 win over Newcastle to claim their second title of the season.

Manchester United got to the final of the Champions League with an underdog tag to play against the favourite Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou, Barcelona.

Late goals from Manchester United’s striker in the last minute and in the additional time secured the surprising victory for Fergusson and his men.

Goals from Teddy Sheringham and OleGunnar Solsjaer respectively gave the Old Trafford outfit the needed goals to clinch the trophy.
