Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has warned his team against complacency after the Etihad had an easy victory over Basel at the St Jakob Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Premier League pacesetters thrashed the Switzerland Champions 4-0 in the first leg of the second round but Kompany knows his side can't let off in the second leg.

The defender is playing for the first time this season in the competition due to injury but the team has done well even without presence.

The Belgian defender has urged his teammates to remained focus and determined and Kompany imbibe  the team to turned back towards the foundation they set when it was not all easy during the early stage of the competition

"It always goes back to the same thing – the work rate in defending and recovering the ball early," the captain told BT Sport

"With their back five, they're a little bit similar to Chelsea how they try to get out quickly. You're stretched as a back four.

"The pitch was really difficult and it was cold out there. For a Champions League game, we did ever so well."

Manchester City is still much alive in all competitions and will welcome Basel after the EFL Cup final against Arsenal and the Premier League game between Arsene Wenger’s men and Chelsea.

Kompany is of the opinion despite their heavy 4-0 advantage they cannot approach the game against Basel with levity.

"In this kind of situations, in my opinion, it's about more than that," he added.

"If we have this game at the Etihad and it’s a 3-2 or a 2-2 draw, that won't give us a good feeling to go into the next round.

"We've shown we were the best team today and only a lack of enthusiasm will stop that at the Etihad. That's not permitted."

Up next for Manchester City will take on Wigan in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday at the DW Stadium.
