The newly named Enyimba Captain was livid by the drunken looking officer and asked him to leave his way but the officer took offense and claimed that he has been insulted and mobilized his colleagues to the scene.

He was then battered by the group of security operatives who left him with a bruised face and blood gushing out from the nose and mouth.

According to an eye-witness on the scene: “I recognized it was Mfon immediately he got down from his car and was expecting the officers to allow him pass through but after coming out of his for the second time he was surrounded and beaten up.

“I couldn’t tell why from the distance I was watching from but the officer that stood front of the car was staggering a little and words were exchanged before the ugly incident took place.

“It is sad that these security operatives who are supposed to protect us are the ones that are proving to be the real threats. I was lost for words to see that happen to a very big name in Nigeria football – it’s totally unacceptable. I hope proper actions are taken to address this ugly mess.”

Mfon is the all-time highest goalscorer in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) with 23 goals in a single season. He is also the first player to score over 35 league goals in two seasons in the domestic league. He made his debut for Nigeria in a friendly against Ghana in November 2014.
