England international Danny Welbeck says he is embracing the challenge of having to compete Arsenal record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and last summer acquisition Alexandre Lacazette as he looks to establish a role in the Gunners' squad.

Arsenal invested over £100m in their striking force since the end of last summer, breaking their transfer record first to bring in Lacazette from Lyon before doing it again to sign Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in January.

With Lacazette currently sidelined after knee surgery and Aubameyang ineligible in Europe, Welbeck is the only senior striker available to Arsene Wenger in the Europa League and has led the line in the round of 32 and 16 ties against Ostersund and AC Milan.

Despite not being able to make a major impact in those games as he is without a goal since the 4-2 FA Cup third round defeat to Nottingham Forest on January 7, Welbeck believes the pressure posed by Arsenal’s marquee signings will give him the needed push.

"It's competition and I embrace it. Ever since I was a young kid, I've been playing for an academy with scouts all over the world that are looking for top players to come in.

"You have competition throughout your whole life and it only makes you better. That competitive edge gives you extra motivation." said Welbeck according to the Evening Standard

The former Manchester United man has only five goals in 30 appearances this season and hasn’t found the net in the Premier League since September 9.

Hip and groin injuries have further derailed the season, a harsh blow for a player who still appears to be dealing with the repercussions of two major knee cartilage injuries that limited him to three months of action between May 2015 and January 2017.
