Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed why he could not make any defensive signing in the just-concluded winter transfer window.

Wenger brought in Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United in a swap deal which saw Alexis Sanchez head in the opposite direction before breaking the club's transfer record for Gabonese star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who arrived from Borussia Dortmund.

The Gunners' boss whose only defensive addition was in the form of young Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos says lack of “financial power” decided Arsenal's fate in bolstering their defensive ranks.

"Look, defensive strengthening is a huge problem for everybody.

"Everybody looks for defenders. You could see again, you look at City, they buy again a defender. How much money did they spend on defenders in the last three years?

"We don't have the financial power of Manchester City. And the fact that they conceded half the goals we conceded is as well down to the fact that offensively they are very powerful. And they have a lot of possession in the opponent's half that we have not." Wenger told Goal
