After a run of four straight losses, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes his side's win over AC Milan proves they are up for the fight of turning their season around.

The poor run has exacerbated the call for Wenger to leave the club, with fans, ex-players and pundits questioning the Frenchman’s continued stay, but the Gunners’ boss believes the commanding display in Italy proves they can still get the job done.

“That's what we wanted, overall at some stage you need to respond together with a good performance. That's what we did tonight,” said Wenger.

“The result will lift the belief in the team a little bit. Because when you lose three days in six days it's always very difficult. We had our backs to the wall tonight and we had to respond. That's we did. We needed to find mental resources.

“We want to show the fighting spirit, that we have the mental resources and qualities. We lost the Carabao Cup final against a team (Manchester City) that is dominating English football and we have to accept that.

“That does not mean the team has no spirit. You have to show that until the end of the season.”
