Alvaro Morata was over the moon on Saturday night when Spain defeated Italy to go three points clear of the Italians in the Group G standings for the World Cup qualifiers at the Bernabeu.

The Spanish forward came off the bench to score the third goal of the night from an assist from Sergio Ramos in the 77th minute.

The victory has placed Spain in the driving seat ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and Italy will need the playoff game to make it to the group stage of the World Cup, and he was quick to praise the support La Roja received at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“It looked easier than it was, it’s certainly not easy to beat Italy, especially like this,” the Chelsea striker told Rai Sport.

“We had a great game and thank the fans at the Bernabeu who backed us all the way.

“I expected to be on the bench and knew we would play like this, as the last time we beat Italy, it was with a similar system, so I was mentally prepared to come on in the second half.

“Scoring against Buffon? I really love Gigi and I want him to be happy. I’d never managed to score against him, but from now on I hope everything goes his way.”

Spain will play Liechtenstein in there next game while Italy will take on Israel.
