Virgil van Dijk had the most remarkable debut for Liverpool after scoring a late winner to clinch the Merseyside derby for the Reds against Everton in the FA Cup on Friday night.

The Holland international, signed from Southampton for £75million on January 1, made his debut for Liverpool in a third round FA Cup clash with city rivals Everton at Anfield and with the game at 1-1 with five minutes left, the defender headed home a corner to earn the Reds a place in the next round and announce himself in proper fashion to the Kop.

Speaking after the game, Van Dijk said: “Playing at Anfield for Liverpool is a dream for every player - I think,” he told the BBC.

“What a night, fully deserved - obviously. It felt amazing to be out there, playing with these guys.

“The goal was very special for me and obviously for my family as well.”

Meanwhile, scorer of the opening goal for Liverpool, James Milner said: “It's not an easy game to step into but it's the sort of game I'm sure he's come here to play and under the lights at Anfield it's very special, and a Merseyside derby.

“For him to step in and perform how he did, that's what we expect of him to be honest. We've seen what a good player he is and there's a lot more to come.”
