Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid deserve to be “congratulated” for their performance against Celta Vigo, despite their Copa del Rey elimination.
The European champions salvaged a 2-2 draw in Galicia but it was way short of turning over a 2-1 defeat at the Bernabeu last time out.
Danilo's own goal on the brink of half-time handed the hosts a troubling lead but Cristiano Ronaldo gave Madrid hope of one of their famous cup comebacks when he levelled
scores on the night just after the hour mark.
But Zidane maintained his side “did everything” to overturn their deficit.
“We did everything. I must congratulate the lads on how they played,” he said.
“Nothing came [of our efforts], but we tried.
“Casemiro at centre-back? We had to do something. We had a fantastic half-hour in the first half and it was a shame that they got the first goal.
“What happens next? We must keep going and think about the League and Champions League.”
Madrid, who were seeking their first Copa title since 2014, had been disqualified in the opening round of last season’s competition after fielding an ineligible player.Celta have
never won the Copa del Rey and have not made it to the final since 2001 when they lost to Real Zaragoza.
Barcelona, the two-time defending champion, will try to reach their seventh straight semifinals on Thursday when they hosts
Real Sociedad. Barcelona won the first leg 1-0.
