Matchday three in Champions League Group A will Ajax hosting group leaders Napoli at Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday night.

The Dutch side have had a promising start to the campaign so far, defeating Scottish side Rangers followed by a narrow defeat away against Liverpool at Anfield.

Ajax are coming into this encounter after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Go Ahead Eagles over the weekend and sit in second place in the Eredivisie league table

Napoli humble Liverpool before easing past Rangers at Ibrox to gain maximum points is currently in first place in Serie A.

The Neapolitans will attempt to repeat their earlier victory over Torino, which they did by a score of 3-1, this week.


As far as their official head-to-head record is concerned, Ajax and Napoli are tied because each team has won one of the two games that have been played between them.

The previous meeting between the two teams took place in 1970 and ended in a comfortable 4-0 home victory for Ajax.

Ajax are winless in their last 11 European matches against Italian opponents at home, with their previous such victory coming against AS Roma in 2002.

The Dutch side have won their last four matches at home in the UEFA Champions League and have scored four goals in each of their last three home matches in Europe.


Napoli have never won a match away from home in a European competition in the Netherlands and will look to create history this week.

The Serie A league leaders have won the first two games of their UEFA Champions League campaign this season and could win their first three games in the group stage for the first time in their history.
