Atletico Madrid suffered their first defeat in La Liga following a 2-0 defeat against Villarreal at Wanda Metropolitano with goals from Yeremi Pino and Gerard Moreno was enough to seal the victory for the visitors.

The first half ended 0-0, both teams played attacking football with Villarreal being the team with a slight ball advantage over the host.

The visitors have 10 goal attempts with just two shots on goal with no real threat at the Atletico Madrid defence, while the host had six shots on goal with three shots on goal.

The second half was more open and a defensive error in the backline of Atletico Madrid saw Villarreal break the deadlock via Pino in the 73rd minute of the clash to make it 1-0.

Atletico Madrid Nahuel Molina was shown a red card in the additional time of the second half for aggressively shoving a Villarreal player.

The home team went on an all-attack but a swift counter-attack caught the Atletico Madrid defence open and it was all left for Moreno to put it beyond Jan Oblak with just a minute left to play.

Villarreal won 2-0 to be on point with Real Madrid, Real Betis and Osasuna.

Atletico Madrid will take a trip to Mestalla to face Valencia in their next La Liga match while Villarreal will face Hajduk Split in their conference league qualification.
