Croatia defeated Austria 3-1 to advance to the playoff stage of the UEFA Nations League while David Alaba’s Austria suffered relegation to the lower group.

Luka Modric broke the deadlock for Croatia in the 9th minute, the Real Madrid ace fired the ball into the back of the next following an assist from Torino midfielder Nikola Vlasic.

Austria equalised after three minutes thanks to Christoph Baumgartner’s effort that went to the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Marko Arnautovic connected with a loose pass inside the box and released a tremendous shot towards the left side of the goal. However, Dominik Livakovic anticipates the shot and makes a brilliant save to deny the forward the opportunity to put Austria ahead.

Michael Gregoritsch jumped for a cross and glances a header towards the right side of the goal, but it appeared to be easy save for Dominik Livakovic.

Ivan Perisic played a neat lofted pass into the box for Marko Livaja, who beat the defender in the air and planted a header into the bottom right corner from close range to score the second goal for the Croats in the 69th minute to make it 1-2.

Croatia quickly made it 1-3, Lovro Majer sent a superb cross into the box. Dejan Lovren latches on to it and from close range planted a header into the bottom left corner, leaving Heinz Lindner beaten.
