Barcelona is in a deep financial crisis and one of the club players has offered to play for free in a bid to lessen the club’s debts ahead of the coming season.
Gerard Pique has offered to render free service for Barcelona and he has met with the club president Joan Laporta to express his desire.
Barcelona is also struggling to meet the LaLiga Fair-Play and Pique is prepared to step in and offer some assistance, the centre back lowered his wage last season so that the club could accommodate the arrival of Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay hours before Barcelona started LaLiga at the Camp Nou against Real Sociedad last season.
Pique is prepared to adjust his deal with the club before the commencement of La Liga, according to to report in AS. The defender has dropped in the pecking order, he is the fifth centre-back in the squad and he is set to fight for a place in Xavi Hernandez’s lineup.
Pique’s commitment to the club is unequal, he renewed his contract in 2020 but he is willing to modify and plays for free an offer Lionel Messi could offer the club before he joined forces with Paris Saint-Germain.
Although Barcelona is unwilling to accept Pique’s offer to play for free, his new salary will depend on the needs of the team to be able to register the signed players and the renewed ones such as Dembélé or Sergi Roberto.
The defender’s contract is one of the contracts the club’s board suspects to be irregular during Bartomeu’s reign as the president of the club.
Sergio Busquets is also following Pique’s path and could negotiate for a drop in salary in a bid to register new signings at the club before the start of La Liga.
