Real Madrid attacker Karim Benzema was the player who single-handed dismantled Chelsea and helped the team to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League on 5-4 aggregate.

Chelsea mounted a comeback against Real Madrid and Los Blancos was on the verge of elimination at the hands of Thomas Tuchel’s men before the French attacker came to the party and the to rescue a team that was once considered the favourite to progress following their two goals advantage from the first leg of the clash.

Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 15th minute of the clash following Mason Mount’s power shot that went beyond Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger doubled the lead at the start of the second half before and with just 15 minutes to end the game Timo Werner scored to make it 3-0.

Marcos Alonso scored another goal for Chelsea but it was correctly cancelled due to the assistance of VAR as there was a handball in the build-up and at this point, the reality was done on Real Madrid and it all started with manager Carlo Ancelotti throwing in Rodrygo Goes at the expense of Fede Valverde it took no long before the Brazilian attacker showed why he was brought in, the goal made it 3-1 and on aggregate both teams were on level terms 4-4 and the tie went to extra-time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

At this point, Real Madrid needs the connection between Vinicius and Benzema to bail them out of the situation as it seems Chelsea has fired all they got having been able to manage to come back from a two-goal deficit and even went ahead at some point before the huge turn around from Real Madrid.

Though Luka Modric and Rodrygo started the comeback it was the combination of Vinicius and Benzema that ensure Real Madrid put the tie to rest despite Chelsea on the brink of an incredible victory thanks to the timely intervention of Benzema who capitalise on a huge slip from Rudiger to head in the winner in the first half of the extra time.

Benzema completed the Real Madrid revival and the goal against Chelsea is his 12th in the current Champions League campaign, his 83rd goal in his all-time Champions League goal ranking, he has now scored more Champions League goals this season (12) than Lionel Messi (5) and Cristiano Ronaldo (6) combined (11).

The former Lyon attacker is the French highest goal scorer in the history of the competition.

Benzema needs seven more goals to pass Raul and become Real Madrid’s second-highest goalscorer.

first French player to score 12 goals in a Champions League campaign (group stage to final).
