Real Madrid attacker Karim Benzema has explained why he decided to take his penalty (a classy penalty, a cheeky dink down the middle) in the way he did against Manchester City in their Champions League clash.

Real Madrid was two goals down then and a handball in the box by Aymeric Laporte led to a penalty for Real Madrid and of course, Benzema stepped up.

Before this time, Benzema lost to spot-kick in the space of seven minutes both being saved by Osasuna’s Sergio Herrera.

Benzema was composed this time and he is aware that Real Madrid was chasing the game and a goal from the spot will aid the team’s ambition against Manchester City.
Speaking after the match, SkySports carried his explanation of his mindset.

“I always have it in my head that if you don’t take a penalty, you will never miss a penalty. That’s mental confidence and that’s all. I have a lot of confidence in myself… so I do it and it turns out well.”

Real Madrid will go up against Espanyol in their next La Liga game on Saturday before the game against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu.
