A very big responsibility for Super Eagles striker Josh Maja after he was named penalty-taker for FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

The 23-year-old Nigeria international returned to Matmut Atlantique after spending the second half of the season at Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City where he scored two goals and provided three assists in 17 appearances in all competitions.

Maja has now been favored by coach David Guion after starting all their four in Ligue 2 in the 2022-2023 season but ahead of FC Bordeaux’s Ligue 2 encounter against EA Guingamp on Saturday.

The coach was quizzed by reporters on who his penalty taker for the season was as he said via the club’s official website: “Josh Maja. He has a great faculty in this technical gesture.

“Today, there were no young people to replace him. It is a technical gesture to achieve which requires a detached side when striking. see it in training, Josh fulfills quite a few of those conditions.”

Maja has rejected a contract extension offer from Ligue 2 outfit Bordeaux despite his current deal expiring in June 2023 as he earns more than €100k a month.

The Les Girondins hoping Maja can stay at the club to lead their immediate return to the French topflight having suffered relegation due to them finishing bottom of the 20-team Ligue 1 table.

Maja has made one appearance for Super Eagles under former national team coach Gernot Rohr who he enter in the closing stage during a 2-2 draw with Ukraine in 2019.

Maja started his career with Sunderland and has been linked with possible moves to clubs in the Sky Bet Championship and Belgian Pro League.
