Bad defensive errors as Netherland beat Nigeria’s Falconets 2-0 at the ongoing 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Costa Rica on Monday early morning.
Chris Danjuma Musa-led side has been one of the most delightful teams to watch in the tournament after winning beating France, South Korea, and Canada to top Group C.
The Falconets bossed the early part of the game and had a shout for a penalty on nine minutes after Flourish Sabastine was brought down inside the box but the referee waved play on.
But it was the Netherlands who took the lead on 12 minutes through Zera Hilswit who volleyed into the top corner after a poor clearance from Falconets skipper Blessing Demehin.
The Falconets continued to push forward and almost equalized in 32 minutes but Deborah Abiodun’s long-range effort hit the crossbar while Okuwchukwu’s follow-up was tipped away for a corner.
However, two minutes later Netherlands who doubled their through Ziva Henry after another defensive error by Nigeria center-back/
Falconets could not manage to convert the numerous chances that came begging and even the glimmer of hope that came deep in stoppage time in form of a penalty was overturned after a VAR review to sum up Nigeria’s night and to make clear the side luck chose to favour.
Nertherland who were second best in every aspect will face Spain in first ever appearance in the semi-finals at the U-20 women’s World Cup.
The last time the Falconets made it to the semi-finals was at the 2014 edition in Canada.
