Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has rejected to become backroom staff for newly appointed Red Devil manager Erik Ten Hag, according to a report.

The 52-year-old Dutch coach put pen to paper on a three-year contract with an option of a further year to switch to Old Trafford from John Cruyff Arena on Thursday.

Ten Hag has indicated he will bring his backroom staff along with him from Ajax but the new Manchester United manager would like to bring in someone who knows about the club very well.

Nonetheless, as indicated by The Athletic, that figure won’t be Rooney, who is said to have given a negative answer when casual contact was recently made with him.

The report suggests that former Manchester United club captain, who has been forging his own managerial career at Derby County, would only leave his current position for another big job elsewhere.

Red Devil management are verge of bringing ex-Sir Alex Ferguson assistant Steve McClaren back to Old Trafford after previous work with Ten Hag during his time with FC Twente.
