Manchester City retains the Premier League title after coming back in five minutes from a 0-2 defeat of Aston Villa (3-2) to become champion in a heart-stopping final day of the English League.
Guardiola ‘s men only needed to win and for almost 80 minutes they did everything possible not to achieve it. It was one of the worst games of the season for the cityzen team : a lot of touch and possession, but the clear chances did not come over the goal of Robin Olsen , the Swedish goalkeeper whom Gerrard decided to make his debut with the villain elastic on this last day.
It was not like Agüero ‘s goal in the mythical and eternal 93:20 that the League gave them in 2012, but what is clear is that the cityzen team loves drama. He likes uncertainty. And he resolved the Premier in five minutes.
City had tried in every possible way, most of them from corner kicks that came to nothing, shots from outside the box, inaccuracies in the last third of the pitch… and, ultimately, nerves. Wolverhampton ‘s early goal at Anfield didn’t help either, as the equalizer was serving Manchester City at the time . Instead, Red legend Gerrard’s Aston Villa had other plans.
Cash, in minute 37, opened the scoring. On the Villains ‘ only chance in the first half, Digne crossed from the left wing and Cash just had to put his head down and direct it into the back of the net. Cancelo missed the mark and Ederson could have done more, but the play was impeccable.
The surprise increased when, after the restart, Coutinho put justice on the scoreboard after his teammate Watkins missed a couple of very clear chances to make the goal difference bigger.
After that goal, Gundogan entered the cityzen machine center and everything changed. The entry of the German changed the course of the match and led to the best five minutes of the Premier so far : those that go from 76′ to 81′ of the match against Aston Villa. The midfielder, a beacon for Klopp ‘s Borussia Dortmund , Bundesliga champion in 2012 and Champions League finalist in 2013 , embittered his former coach with a masterful performance.
Only in those five minutes Manchester City managed to score three goals. The German opened the account with a header to a pass from Sterling -another change from Guardiola-. Rodri, from outside the area, tied the game at 78′.
The emotion lasted until the end, but the story ended the same as on four of the last five occasions: with Manchester City as champions.
