New Super Eagles goal poacher Cyriel Dessers scored twice and provided an assist as KRC Genk beat Standard Liege 3-1 in week two of the Belgian Pro League encounter at Luminus Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The 27-year-old Nigerian striker nets his first goal for Nigeria during their 2-1 defeat to Mexico in May 2022 after he nods in new Ajax signing Calvin Bassey’s cross to level the score for Super Eagles.
Dessers led the attack for KRC Genk in the absence of his fellow Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu who remained on the sidelines due to an injury but former Heracles Almelo goal machine was supported by Ghanaian forward Joseph Paintsil and Mike Tresor Ndayishimiye in the encounter.
The wantaway striker got his mark five minutes into the clash after receiving a through ball from Paintsil before he struck past Standard Liege goalkeeper Arnaud Bodart to put the host in front.
Dessers turned provider 11 minutes later after he slotted a perfect pass to Tresor as the exciting young Belgian star make no mistake to ensure Genk extend their lead in the opening stages of the encounter.
Denis Dragus responded for the visiting team Standard Liege in the 24th minute but the new Super Eagles goal poacher completed the damage in the 29th minute after scoring from the spot to get his brace of the tie.
Dessers was substituted four minutes from time after both sides failed to find the back of the net as he was replaced by Hungarian striker Andras Nemeth.
The win saw Genk return to winning ways after losing match day one to defending champions Club Brugge but Dessers future remains in doubt despite scoring three goals in his first two games.
