Dembele was set to leave for a free transfer in the summer but the former Borussia Dortmund ended up putting the pen to paper for a two-year deal that would see him remain at the Camp Nou till 2024, but Barcelona was on the verge of selling him in his final year after the star failed to commit his future to the club before he eventually extended his deal.
Barcelona is seriously considering selling the French star in January or in the summer according to report by Marti Molina at Diari Ara. Dembele has a buyout clause at €100 million which means he is “relatively affordable” to Europe’s top clubs.
Barcelona has already put a succession plan in place with Real Madrid Marco Asensio their favourite to fill the spot, the Real Madrid winger would be out of contract at the end of the season and he fits into the budget at Barcelona.
Dembele’s early days at Barcelona was hampered by injuries and the winger admitted that he wasted his time at the club, the 24-year-old also told RMC Sport that Xavi’s willingness to keep faith in him throughout his contract talks with Barcelona in 2022 helped him decide to stay on at the club.
Dembele has been a regular player under manager Xavi Hernandez and he has put his injury worries behind him at Barcelona, finishing as the last season top of the assists charts in La Liga and has four in six matches this season.
Dembele’s recent extension could mean he would be part of the club’s plan for the future.
