Super Eagles playmaker Kelechi Nwakali has reacted after ending a goal drought in SD Ponferradina’s 2-1 loss to Real Zaragoza in the Spanish Segunda.

The 24-year-old Nigeria international joined the Spanish second division side on a free transfer after leaving SD Huesca last summer.

Nwakali was handed a start once again by coach José Gomes as he has had a turnaround since joining La Ponfe, where he made his fifth league appearance.

Former Arsenal star equalises for SD Ponferradina with a minute left to the half-time break when he found space outside the 18-yard area before picking his spot and unleashing a thunderous effort past Cristian Alvarez.

Giuliano Simeone, who is the son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone, got Zaragoza’s two goals in the 12th and 51st minutes.

Nwakali would be disappointed with the result but he would be slightly pleased to have ended his long goals drought panning to 504 days as he took to his social media handle to celebrate the goal by saying it can only get better.

It was his first goal for club and country in 504 days, with his last strike coming against Kenneth Omeruo’s CD Leganés on April 25, 2021.

Nwakali played 34 matches combined for AD Alcorcón, SD Huesca, SD Ponferradina and the national team without finding the net.

Former Golden Ball winner in U17 display against Zaragoza will be good news for Ponferradina who are currently sitting in position 15 of the 22-team table with six points from five matches.

Nwakali now has five goals in 47 appearances in the Spanish Segunda Division, spread across games for Huesca, Alcorcon, and Ponferradina.

Super Eagles star will hope to score again when Ponferradina visit Estadio Carlos Belmonte to take on Albacete in the sixth fixture of the season on Sunday.
