Super Eagles striker Simeon ‘Simy’ Nwankwo has chosen Benevento ahead of Obafemi Martins’ former club Birmingham City.

The 30-year-old out-of-favor Nigeria international will be spending the remainder of the season on loan at an Italian Serie B club with an option to buy included in the agreement from Salernitana.

Nwankwo has been tipped to move to Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City all summer after falling down the pecking order at Salernitana with the summer arrival of Krzysztof Piatek, Boulaye Dia, and Diego Valencia.

Serie D club delighted after signing forgotten Super Eagles midfielder

The Forgotten Super Eagles goalscorer has not been given any single opportunity this season in the Serie A after he was not listed in all three league matches so far.

Benevento has confirmed the signing of Nwankwo via the club’s official website after they won the race ahead of Birmingham City on a season-long loan deal.

The statement said: “Benevento Calcio announces that it has reached an agreement with Salernitana for the right to sporting services for striker Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo (Simy). The Nigerian footballer, born in 1992, arrives at the Giallorossi club on a temporary basis with the right of option.”

Nwankwo is Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in Serie A with 31 goals in 101 games but has not scored in the division since October 2021.

The Onitsha-born forward, who was a part of the Super Eagles squad for the FIFA World Cup in 2018 will team up with his fourth Italian club since arriving in the country from Portugal in 2016.

Nwankwo is expected to compete against Francesco Forte and Antonio La Gumina for a starting spot at Stadio Ciro Vigorito and he could make his debut on Friday when Benevento battles Venezia at Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium.
