Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 win over Valencia in La Liga Monday evening at the Mestalla, thanks to a goal from Antoine Griezmann which earned the visitors a vital three points to stay in touch with the league leaders.
Alvaro Morata scored for the visitors in the fourth minute of the match but it was rightly ruled off-side, Valencia responded in the 24th minute following a shot from Yunus Musah thanks to VAR interference that cancelled out the goal it would have been 1-0 up for the host.
It was a cagey affair in the first half as both teams were cautious of each other’s mistakes.
Valencia had great ball possession in the first half and had more goal attempts as well.
Griezmann was the man of the moment for Atletico Madrid, the French star created a space for himself at the edge of the box before he fired a shot that took a deflection into the net.
Mattheus Cunha’s strike went to the back of the net with just five minutes to end the game but it was ruled off-side.
The goal was enough for Diego Simone’s team to move the sixth position on the log while Valencia dropped to the 14th position and this marked their second defeat in a roll having previously lost to Athletic Bilbao.
Gennaro Gattuso’s men will welcome Getafe in their next match while Atletico Madrid will take a trip to San Sebastian to face Real Sociedad.
